DUNEDIN EXHIBITION.
AUSTRALIAN WINES. Dunedin, December 28. At the commercial travellers’ dinner last night Mr Scott, of South Australia, complained that the New Zealand Government imposed a duty of 5s per gallon on South Australian wines, which otherwise could be sold here 4s or 5s per gallon. Mr Fergus, in replying, assured Mr Scott that the New Zealand Government and the New Zealand Parliament were at the present moment about to enter into a reeriprocal treaty for the admission of South Australian produce free, and that colony had granted a similar concession to us. As to the desirability of fostering the Exhibition in London the Government recognised that thecapabilities of the colony should be exhibited there, but it required “the sinews of war.” He promised that the Government would consider the matter, and, after paying their just engagements, he believed they would bo glad to fqpward the interests of this colony in the direction indicated as far as they possibly could.
