SHOCKING ACCIDENT. FALL OF THIRTY-FIVE FEET. WORKMAN DANGEROUSLY INJURED. Auckland, December 17.

A distressing accident occurred aboufc two o'clock thisafternoontoaman named Samuel Vivian. He was engaged assisting the painters who are renovating the United Service Hotel at the corner of Queen and WeUe&ley streets. Vivian was right at the top and had got off the ladder in order to stand on the cornice above the window. In order to steady himself he caught hold of a portion of the plaster scrolls beneath the parapet. The position was a dangerous one, as the least slip would cause him to overbalance. Suddenly the plaster broke off in his hand, with the result that the unfortunate man was precipitated a distance ot 35 feet to the asphalt pavement. He fell on his face with a sickening thud and immediately a lot of blood stained the pavement. Vivian was quickly removed to Tennent'a chemist shop, and Sergeant Lyons promptly sent for medical assistance. Drs. Challinor Purchas and Lawry were soon in attendance. A slight examination showed that the man's right arm and lower iaw were fractured, while his leg, though not bpoken, was severely crushed by the knee. He was also bleeding prgfusely from the mouth, several of his teeth having been knocked opt. The medical gentlemen recommended that Yjvian should be removed to the Hospital. Constable (Jrey therefore went to the Market and returned with the ambulance van, in which the sufferer was at once removed to the Hospital, Vivian is well known in Auckland, as some time ago he was licensee of the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Since that time he has bepn engaged as a cab driver and more recently was employed at the restaurant attached to the United Service Hotel. Vivian is a middle aged man. It is feared that in addition to the fractures mentioned, he has also suffered internal injury.
