ScnrMvuvr unsuccessful attempt was made ye«teiday morning bo rob the Moanabaiaii (Jold Mining Company Battery of any amalgam it might cont-un. It i^ believed that the thief obtained entrance Lo the batteiy by crawling underneath the broken door ab bhc back of tho sbampois, but ho did not securo much for bin tioublc, as when bhc amalgamator wa3 lucking up the battery at ten o'clock on Satuivlay night lie removed •ill the amalgam from the wooden cupboards to bhc iron safe excepting i litblo quicksiher which had not been f,quee/,ed, con baining about ben shil lingo' worth of amalgam. When the mine manager inspected the battery yesbciday ho found that, six wooden cupboards had been pi i/od open by means of t.n iron bar. The police are now investigating the matter, but have nob yel obtained any cluo to the thief.
