SCHOOI, FETE COMMITTEE.
A meeting of the Te Aroha School Fet.) Committee was held on Wednesday ovenI ing last, tho following members of the School Committee being present : Rev S. Lawry (Chairman), Messrs Lavery, Heathcote, Merzies, Airier, and A rmit, also the head teacher, Mr W. H. P. Marsdon, (Mr Holt, one of the members of the School Committee, sent an apology for his absence, owing to other engagements). j The Chairman read a letter from Miss , Hould, assistant teacher, requesting the J Committee to endorse her application to , the Boarl of Education, to be transferred «to a town school, so thai she conld reside with herpaients. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Board, staling the Committee had no objection to Miss Houid's application. The Chairman stated the first' matter ; for their consideration was $he day on | which the fete was to be held, It would • be better to havo it on a day when the f teachers would be present, as if they couU secure the help of some of the teachers it was desirable to do so. j Mr Menzies suggested the fete be held on the 29th January, 1890. A long discussion ensued a 9 to the advisability of altering the date. It I was stated that as the school did not • open until the 6rst Monday after j Anniversary Pay (29th Janua\y), in all I probability the teachers would not be present on the date suggested, and therefore it would be ad\isable to have the fete on New Year's Day, as heretofore. Mr Menzies moved the fete be held on 29th January ; seconded by Mr Armit. j Mr Marsdon aUted that the Committee had better not consider him in the matter, as he would net be at Te Aroha on the 29th January. Resolved on the motion of Mr Heathrote, seconded by Mr Lavery, that the fete be held ou New Year's Day, as heretofore. Mr Menzies having received permis sion, withdrew his motion, and Mr Heathcote's motion was put and carried Mr Lavery suggested that the Com- | mittee to make and carry out the J necessary arrangements for the fete this year be composed of young people. In doing so Mr Lavery said it would be well to let some of the you n are r folk try their hands ; they certainly had ir»or<> time to spare than the members of tho : Committee, and it would he well to sec : if the proposed change would not work satisfactorily. He thought it would. Aft-^r considerable iliscussion it was resolved that the following voting la«iies be asked to collec-t subscriptions on behalf of the fete : — Misses G. Main<jay, Johnson, Edwards, Ebert, Gribble, and Strange. It was further resolved that these ycung ladies he appointed a Committee, with power to add to their numbu, to carry out the arrangements of the fete. A letter was read from Mr E Y. Cox, stating he had a large supply of books on hand, suitable for p/izes, etc, which he would he glad to let the Committee have at English cost price. Mr Marsdon said it would be better to get books as prizes this year, being more desiiable in every way than toys. ■ It was decided to leave this matter in t!ie hands of theSporlg Committee. Resolved that Messrs Marsdon and Menzies be appointed a Sports Committee, with power to add to their number. Resolved, that the Te Aroha Brass Band be requested to play on New Year's Day at the fete. Mr H. Books, Secretary of the Band being present, promised on behalf of the B«nd that they wouM play on the occasion of the fete.
