HOME RULE. (To the Editor).
Sir, —At Sir Thomas Esnionde's meeting he seemed to try to orerproVe the 1ot« and loyalty of his party to the Union, but it may have been like the vehemence with which the Apostle Peter said to the High Priest's servant " Woman I know not the man," for during his address he expressed the hope that Ireland would soon obtain her independence. This may have been an inadvertince, or ifc might be that from the fall ness of the heart the mouth speaketh ; but he said they were opposed to acts of violence, as these would tend to turn the great tide of English public opinion which was now setting in so strongly in their favour, and which would in leas than three years assure the triumph of their cause. It is to be regretted if he wronged himself and his party by assigning this reason, and not because assassination, boycotting, and violence were in themselves wicked and detestable. You did not reproduce Father Kehoe's able and amusing speech ; but one of his closing remarks seem to hit the gist of Home Rule. Of course he said he would be in favour of soon having a Parliament in Palace Green, M no doubt they would want a chaplain And he meant to apply for the place. A s?ood many mean to have fat billets, which the country would have to pay for, bat they discreetly keep these longings COncoaled under the garb of patriotic aspirations. 1 fear that the 1 rish people would soon iintl that a Dublin Parliament was. not satisfactory Home Itule. Ev<?n we her« are not enraptured with our Wellington rule and Civil Service centralism,, though we are not taxed as the Irish would be to pay-jharges ; see the British Notional Debt, the cost of the Imperial establishment*, the Royal Family, and tlio Army and Nay}', and other services of the Imperial Government without our ■lavini? any say in the mutter, :vnd such Mr Gladstone 1 pioposos for lieLind. I urn, etc., Fair tlav to all. [Our Correspondent a| pears t>i have inadvertently written Palace Green whilst ivferving to College Greco, Dublin.—Ed.]
