THE RIVER ZAMBESI.
ENCROACHMENT BY PORTUGUESE.
London, December 1. Lord Salisbury, replying to a question in the House of Commons, stated that a despatch had been sent to Portugal refusing to recognise the right of the Portuguese to controlthe country on the northern part of the Zambesi River. Portugal declared that she had no desire to encroach on the established right of other countries, but stated that having discovered and explored the district, she had claimed to control the same for a long time back.
