London, November 14. The London Strike Committee wil probably rescind the vote of recently passed tor the assistance of Broken Hill (Australia) miners who refused to work with blacklegs, owing to matters in dispute there having been amicably arranged. The money thus voted will be used to assist workmen on strike elsewhere. Lord Rosebery, speaking at Liverpool, said the Liberal programme included payment of members and drastic reform in the House of Lords. Mr VV. \V. B. Beach, M. P. for North Hants, speaking at Liverpool, urged the combination of Unionists and Tones. The Hon. Mr Goschen, speaking at the same meeting, said they depended on the rank and file.
London, November 15. The Strike Committee have voted towards the Dock Labourers' Union. The Finance Committee will dissolve on S iturday. Mr And, member of the House of Commons, suggests the appointment of a Royal Commission to report on the labour question with the view of ci eating Courts of Arbitration for the settlement of disputes such as have recently occurred. The surplus of the dockers' strike fund is dwindling, owing to the frequent demands made upon it for the assistance of distress caused by the strike. ! The foremen and clerks connected with the Tilbury docks refused to form a union, as by doing so they would be acting contrary to the terms of agreement entered into between themselves individually and their employers, and would cause them to forfeit pensions to whicn they weie entitled under the same agreements. Many of the Union men employed at the docks are therefore opposed to the strike now contemplated with a view to compelling the foremen and clerks to accede to their demands for combination. The inferior members of the circle concerned in the West End scandal, which resembles the Boulton-P&rk affair, are being tried secretly, and the press is consequently protesting. The " Times " puohshes a letter from Sir Alexander Cockburn with reference to the constitution of Western Australia, in which it is suggested that the unoccupied, unassigned territories of that colony ought to rrmain under control of the Imperial Government w til they are handed ove* to the Federal Government in trust for the proposed Australian Dominion. The Canadian Atlantic cable to Clew Bay, Ireland, will be laid shortly. Lady Samuel will christen the first of the Australian cruisers to be launched by Armstrong, on the 25th insr., and Lady Beiry will christen the second. PhiL Robinson, the well-known war correspondent, who recently visited New Zealand, has become bankrupt. New York, November 14. Sullivan is willing to fight Jackson, the Australian pugilist, for a purse of 25 000 dollars and the championship ot the worid.
Sydney, Nov. 18. The " Sydney Morning Herald " has an article in to-day's issue refeiring to the movement in the direction of altering the national system of education in New Zealand. The " Herald " says it is probable one of the issues of the next general in that colony will be denominational versus national education, and that the losult of the contest will be watched with considerable interest in Australia. The " Herald " predicts that national education will emerge from the convict unaltered in any essential paiticular, but better adapted for the accomplishment of its gteat mission.
Melbourne, Nov. 18. The Board of Health has requested the Government to prosecute the captain ot the Yirra lor having suppressed ihe fact that he had on board a passenger suffering from smallpox.
