THE GOVERNOR OF TAHITI. ARRIVAL OF M. LA CASCADE Auckland, Nov. 15.

The Island steamer Richmond, which ar« rived from her South Sea trip early this morning^' t was the bearer to Auckland ot a French 3 colonial governor, M. La Cascade, governor of Tahiti and the Society group. He" is accompanied by several members of his family and his' official staff. He is en route for Paris, having obtained absence on sick-leave from Tahiti, the duration of which will be 'decided by the Colonial Minister at Horrfe. M. La Cascade will most likely remain a year onhia furlough, returning to Tahiti via Auckland in about nine months. He is just now staying at the Grand Hotel in" rfinces street, where he and his family and scaft will remain for a few days. Next week the Governor leaves for the South, intending to join the next Shaw, Savill, and Albion direct mail steamer for Rio de Janeiro, where he will take a Messageries Maritimes liner for France. M. La Cascade's family will be remembered as having paid Auckland an exttnded visit from Tahiti about a year ago. M. La Cascade has done good service in his capacity as French colonial governor. His name acquired considerable interest in the«e English colonies a few years ago on the occasion of the trouble between Mr Jones, a member of the London Mission Society in \New Caledonia, when Mr Jones was proposed to be " evicted " by the French. M. La Cascade was at the time " Directeur de l'lnterieur " at Tahiti. He was sent down to New Caledonia with tacit instructions from his chief to decide the dispute against Mr Junes. Instead «f this, however, he ga^e as the result of hia mission the opinion that Jones was in the right and the French in the wrong. For this lie was sent home by hig superiors to France, but the French Government promoted him to a higher post. M. La Cascade is a great friend of New Zealand and its products, as far as his influence in the Islands goes. One of his acts was to induce all the vessels of the French navy at Tahiti to use New Zealand meat and various other articles, and no i other.
