The Draughts Tournament commenced at Rangiora about two months ago was brought to a finish last week. Thirty players, took part at the outset, but ten retired Each competitor had to play 104 gameo, and the follow injr proved the prizewinners : — J. Petrie, 70 wins, Ist ; J. Blackett, 69 wins, 2nd ; J. Seed, junr., 68 wins, 3rd ; W. McKechnie, 67 wins, 4th ; J. G. Josling, 65 wins, sth ; C. Jones, 61 wins, 6th ; J. Seed, senr,, 61 wins, 7th. A match for £1 a side is in progress between Mr S. Gray, of the Collingwood Draughts Club, and Mr Salton, of ' the Carlton Draughts Club, the former gentleman having bucked himself not to allow his opponent to win one game in ten. A match was played some months ago between the same players on the same conditions. This was won by M r Salton, who succeeded in placing the tenth of the games to his credit. Mr J. A. Boreham, of Pukeuri Point, Oamaru, returned from Australia recently, and last week paid a visit to Dunedin. During his brief stay he was busy at the " auld fnrrant " game, and gave a very good account of himself. The chief event of his visit was a match of ten games for a stake with Mr D. Brodie, ot Dunedin, which took place in Watson's Hotel on the 15th and 16th inst. Mr G. Foreman acted as referee, Mr Sprightly as timekeeper, and Mr R. Abernethy as stakeholder. The result of the match was a win for Mr Boreham Score: — Boreham, 3; 'Brodie, 0; drawn, 5. Brodie resigned after losing _ the eighth gamp. He appeared to suffer from nervousness, and after, drawing the first four games he lost the fifth, when he was a man up and a clear win in hand. The result of the match was a surprise to the majority, probably because they did not know Borehum's playing power. A 8 evidence of his power we may state that he showed a Glean pair of heels to such worthies as Barclay, Foreman, Shaw, Lawson, etc., and came out unhurt after two sittings with Bell.— " Otago Witness."
