Zalinski returned to Berlin on. October lGth, from a tour of inspection made by permission of the German Government to Kiel, Wilhelm, Shafer and Essen. Concerning the " Herald's " report of the performance of his gun, he says :—": — " While tifteen torpedoes were fired in seventeen and a half minutes, less than the time called for by our contracts, if the Vesuvius had had a well-trained crew, which, ,being..out of commission, she had not, those fifteen lounds could have been fired in five minutes. If guns of heavier calibre had been U3ed 16,500 pounds of charges could have been 1 fired instead of 8,000, as the more rapidly the gun is fired the cooler it gets. " While our contract with the Government calls for our throwing 200-pound charge* one mile every two minutes, which we accomplished, we can throw a 500-pound charge that distance, a 200-pound charge 3,000 yards from a gun on land, and 100pound charges 4,000 yards from a vessel, or threo miles from a shore battery. The pneumatic gun will compel changes in the construction of the hull below the water in vessels of war so as to meet and resist the powerful torpedo action thi3 gun brings into piny."
