CANTERBURY METROPOLITAN SPRING MEETING. Christchurch, November 5.
The weather was really fine for the first day of the Spring Meeting. The course was in capital goiny order, and the aofcendai cc was large and the racing good. His Excellency, Lord Onslow, attended during the daj , and the number of sportsmen from both the Isorth Island and Dunedin was considerable. Mr Campbell succeeded in sending the horses on their journey to a capital start. Scots Grey on the outside, was in front for the first few strides, but when they settled down, Wakatipu, in the centre, was at the head of affairs, scarcely clear of Scots Grey; Occident, Tirailleur, Recluse, Whisper, British Lion, and Dudu following in that order. There was no change passing the stand, but at Cutts's Occident was second and Rscluse third. Wakatipu drew farther away when half-distance had been gone, and was three lengths in advance of Scots Grey and Recluse, who were running side by side, Occident next, Dudu still bringing up the rear. Passing Ford's, Recluse ran into second place, but it was an expiring effort, and in the next hundred yards Scots Grey resumed his position of second, Recluse being in difficulties as they came round the bend, where Tirailleur commenced to go up. Wakatipu was first into the straight, but Scots Grey at once took command, with Tirailleur at his quarters, and Occident next. Tirailleur soon drew level with Scots Grey, and .two hundred yards from home both were under the whip, but the favourite stayed the longer of the two, and won by a neck, with Occident a length away third, Whisper fourth, Wakatipn fifth, Dudu sixth, British Lion seventh, and Recluee lasi..
