DOMINION OF AUSTRALIA. COMMENTS BY THE PRESS. London, November 5.
An "Anglo-Colonial" writing in " Public Opinion" considers the extension of the Federal Council Act sufficient to deal with Australian defences. The "St. James's Gazette" is not clear why Sir Henry Parkes favours a federal system of union. The "Pall Mall Gazelle" says Sir Henry Paikes has brought federation of the Empire within the scope of practical politics. The " Globe " fears dissension amongst the colonies will prove fatal to Sir Henry Parkes's scheme. The " Times " says that the evolution of the principle of federation in the direction of the future destiny of Australia is indicated by history and analogy as the normal tendency of events. The differences which exist between Sir Henry Parkes, Premier of New South Wales, and Mr Duncan Gillies, Premier of Victoria, are not considered to be of vital importance, if there exists an effective desire for unity. The ''Times'' considers the Federal Act a comparatne failure, and says that the selection of a capital, and the adjustment of a federal tariff are the special 'difficulties in view. It considers Sir Henry Parkes' judgment is entitled to respect, if he pronounces the time is ripe for federation, and prove that his method is feasable.
