SPORTING NEWS. VICTORIA RACING CLUB SPRING MEETING.

Melbourne, {Saturday. The V.R.C. Spring Meeting opened to-day with a beautiful mid-summer's day. The attendance was enormous, and among those present were Lord Carrington and the Earl and Countess of Kiutore. The following are the details of the racing : — Melbourne Stakes of lOsovs each, with 500 added ; second, lOOsovs ; third, 50 soys. Weight-for-age. One mile and a quarter. Hon. J. Antaeus and Sinecure cut out the pace, being five lengths in advance of Carbine shortly after the flag fell, with the favourite lying sixth. Half way up the sti'aight Abercorn made his effort, and a tremendous finish between him and Carbine was made more exciting by Melos coming with a biemendous rush, and although he got past Carbine suffered a defeat by Abercorn by half a head, Carbine being half a neck away third. The race was run in the phenomenal time ot 2min B£sec, being 4£sec faster than last year. Rudolph, in the interests of his stable companion, at once rushed to the front and led the field at a merry pace, but at the turn by the river Tinlander ran up to tha leader, with Loyal Stone lying third, and ' Dunkeld tailing off. Dreadnought, who had been lying sixth, now made a forward movement, and held a prominent position as the field approached the home turn. Here Richelieu made a bid for victory, and about a furlong from home took up the running, and looked all over a winner until 100 yards from the winning post, when Hales brought along the favourite, and the race was never afterwards in doubt, Dreadnought winning rather easily by a length and a quarter, the same distance separating second and third. Prince Consort was fourth, Dunkeld fifth, and Tinlander sixth. Time, 2min 41sec. The Maribyrnong Plate of 30sovs each, h. ft., with l.OOOsovs and a trophy value lOOsovs, presented by Mr Mark Moss, added. For two-year-olds — colts, Bst 101b ; fillies, Bst slb.
