CYCLING.
The Ten Miles Championship of Australia, has been fixed by the Victorian Association for November 30th next. The New South Wales Union will probably be represented by J. Edgar, -who is now about the best l'ider in that colony, but he is not expected to have much show against the Victoiian cracks. Thus the " Scottish Cyclist " : " Of the numerous drinks we have tried when riding, we have found that one of the best is one seldom taken by wheelmen ; and it acts both as a thirst quencher and a strength sustainer. Two eggs switched up with a bottle of lemonade is the recipe." This may be useful to our local cyclist?. A fellow quickly gets thirsty in our climate, and the beer is not always good —unfortunately, too. Howell, the English bicyclist champion, some little time back beat the mile record, doing the distance in 2min 31Jsec, which is an advance of three-fifths of a second upon the previous record. Hith erto the holder of the mile record has neairiy always been an amateur. The reception of Lehr, tbie German rider who so gallantly won the championship over the English cracks, SSnyder and Osmond, on his return to Frankfort, was one that was royal in its proportions and enthusiasm. Had the reception been to the Emperor himself it could not have exceeded the one given Lehr. The town went mad in honour of its cycling conqueror.
It is very unsatisfactory at a cricket match having to bowl to a man who squiuta. A trundler on a recent occasion took his little run, and was just a^boufc to deliver a deadly ball to his opponent when he pulled up short ; the batsman's eye being apparently engaged in contemplating the beauties in the grand-statid. "I beg your pardon," yelled our trundler. "Go ahead, I'm all right," growled the striker, and away sped the ball, only fio be immediately lifted to the boundary foir a *' fourer " by the wall-eyed one. The next ball shared the same fate, and our unfortunate friend at once " took himself aiff," vowing that never again would he bowl a ball to any man who couldn't look him straight in the face. Yes !
