LABOUR UNIOINS. Dunedin, Oct. 26.
Ai-TJiit a weck'o sitting at Dunedin tho representatives of the whart labouveis from all parts of the colony have succeeded in forming a united body for the whole of New Zealand, under tho title of the Federated Whaif Labourers ol New Zealand Up to the present close on a thousand men have enrolled. The head oilice is in Dunedin, and branches have been formed in Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Wellington, Auckland, Timarn. Another meeting 1 is being held to form a Maritime Council, consisting of representatives from the Seumen's Union, J)enni«ton and Brunner Coal Winers' Union, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, anil Uunedin Wharf Labourers' Unions, Wcstporb and Grey, mouth Labour Unions, representing about 8.000 men. The basis of constitution for amalgamation for defensive purposes has been diawn and approved, and the rules dialted tor the government of the Council, which will regulate all disputes and strikes which may arise. Mr J. A. Miller is secretary pro iem. It is proposed to hold a meeting- next week to form a Trades and Labour Council for Dunedin on a similar basin to the Victorian Council. The Maritime Council now represents over 8000 men. The basis of the proposed constitution is to act as a Board of conciliation and arbitration, and to endeavour by a distinct and steadfast policy to secure the best possible advantages tor classes of labour represented ; to discuss, consider and put into foice any scheme brought forward in tho interests of trade unionism ; to support or oppose any legislation aflecting maritime labour. Tho delegates have agreed on the rules for the regulation of disputes or stiikes.
