MISCELLANEOUS.
Several runners are out already training for the Amateur sports. Some of the "fatter kine " certainly need a long preparation. Jeffreys, the mile runner, has expressed his intention of taking a trip to Dunedin and entering for the long distance event at the championship meeting there. Saturday afternoon last was a beautiful day for our cyclists' opening run, and they are to be congratulated on its success*. , May they have many another good one during the season. 1 hope to see some New Zealand records broken this year. For the Christ's College Old Boys' race run on October 11th, there were 86 entries. How many will there be in that at the.A.C. and G.S. sports next Friday? Of course, most of the men entered. above do not intend to run, but they give their shilling or two to support the sports of their school. M. A. Holbein and J. Blair have beaten the tandem bicycle record for 50 miles on the road. They started on an Ivel roadster with the intention of establishing a record for 12 hours, but, after completing 50 miles in 2 hours 51min 51»>ec, with a broken saddle plate, and on muddy roads, they turned the job up. Messrs Speight and Co., the well known brewers of l)unedin, have presented a valuable trophy for competition at the Bowling Tournament to be held at Exhibition time. They intend it as a special prize for the match. North v. Middle IsWnd. There will prebnbly be some difficulty as to who shall hold the trophy when won. Miss J. Gebbie, of the Shamrock Hotel, Dunedin, has afoo presented medals fur competition.
It is a matter of congratulation that the gymnasfums conducted" UyPrbfe9Bbis Carrollo and Moss in Auckland are progress* ing so favourably j .as evinced ,by| their successful ~ 'displays 'during y 't\\e] tweak. The opportunities they give to young men in ottices of obtaining the exerciso they need should be highly appreciated. It is a great pity to Bee bo many miserable-looking, puny objects, miscalled men," Joitpring jound our streets when 'steady^Wd/ka6 ! the'exercises'taught by the above gentlemen would develop their muscle and make men of them. Too little attention is paid in English countries to the advantages t« be gained by steady scientific gymnastic exercises. Of course outdoor eports are preferable, but all cannot engage in them, while most can find time for a gymnasium.
