THE CLOTHING TRADE. THREATENED STRIKE IN THE SOUTH.
CiiRiSTOHQRCir, Saturday. At a meetingof the Tailors, Tailoresses, and Fressers Union last night, about 300 were present. The meeting discussed the question as to what was to bo done in connection with the Kaiapoi factory. Ib was decided to forward a resolution inquiring if the directors or management of the Kaiapoi woollen manufactory would pledge themselves to unite with the majority ot the firms who had agreed to do so in eariying out the suggested reforms, and remove the abuses as specified in the circular already torwardcd, the reforms beingjaid down as the fundamental principles of the newly formed Union. The Secretary was instructed to request a reply by Tuesday next at noon The Union express themselves anxious to avoid a strike, which -would throw many men and women out of employment. The dispute will probably lead to trouble, either in the form of a stiike or lock-out.
