MINING NEWS.
Thames, Oct. 17. Saxon. — In this mine the several works are progressing much the same as usual. At No. 5 level, the drive going east or hilhvarri of No. 2 break on the courso of the No. 1 reef has been extended a further distance of 19ft during the past week, for the whole of which length the lode has averaged 3 teeb in width, the quartz being heavily mineralised — iron and copper pyi'ites, antimony, etc. — and showing colours of gold presty freely. A few pounds of picked stone have also been saved at each breaking down. Up to the present, the junction of this reef with what is known as tho footwall has not yet been reached. There are three stopes in progress in this reef east of the break, viz., Nos. 1, 2, and 3, the reef in which varies in thickness from 2^ft to sft, and from all of them quartz of payable grade is being broken out. At the same level going west on No. 2 reef ( a second stope is under way, the reef here" Being over 18 inches thick, well mineralised, and showing a little gold. A second stope is also being carried along on the No. 2 reef, going east, but the ,reef here is not more than 15 inches wide, though gold is much more freely seen, and the stuff from here shapes well at the battery. At this level (No. 5) six stopes are also proceeding on the No. 1 or main reef going west of the No. 1 winze, < and one (No. 7) eastward. The reef in these stopes varies 'from 18 in.ches to three feet thick, and is payable. The drive on the main ? reef west, or seaward of the No. 1 break, has been extended an additional 16ft. for the past week, but the level is at present divided into t-wo branches, with 6ft. of sandstone between them~ The footwall portion, which is 2ft. thick, is 1 the most promising, and is being carried along in the drive, but although the mineral indications are fair, no gold has yet been seen. The country is at present rather slidy in its formation, but should it change the manager is of opinion that the lode will improve. Asalready mentioned the No. 1 tootwall leader was met with a few days ago in the new crosscut at No. "4 level, and proves to be 8 to lOinches thick. Itlooks promising and shows colours of gold, but otherwise there is no change to report. There is still about 80 feet between the face of the drive being driven on this leader and the crosscut. There is no change of interest in the other •workings. The fortnightly return telegraphed yesterday was reduced on melting to 3710z gold. Thames, Oct. 19, Lone Hand. — The country in the General Chute drive at the low level is a splendid description, and is now a good deal easier, so that better progress should be made. The manager intends to let another contract for driving 100 feet here. Crushing will be finished either to-morrow or on Monday, when ab least a payable return may be expected. Cambria. — The 4 or 5 feet of the main reef that was stripped in the drive at the intermediate level was broken down yesterday. Good dabs and colours of gold wore seen distributed through the mineral with which the quartz is impregnated. This drive is in about 25 ieet. Cleaning up is taking place to-day. Warden's Court. — The business transacted yesterday was of an unimportant nature. The applications of Auckland interest were dealt with as follows : — May Queen, adjourned 14th November ; John Kneebone, exchange, Upper Tararu, gi-anted ; Paroquet Gold Mining Company, Waiomo, protection for two months for machine site and water race ; Sylvia, protection for four months for water race and machine site, Upper Tararu ; Martha Extended, Waihi, exchange and amalgamation of tisle, granted ; Maritoto Gold and Silver Mining Company, water race and machine site at Maritoto, granted. CAaiBRiA. —The mine manager wires :—: — " Twenty - seven loads general quartz crushed for 58oz gold ; 11 loads and 181b picked stone irom main reef for 48oz ; and 10 loads tailings berdaned for 6oz. Total yield, 108oz retorted gold."' Cambria. — The manager to day banked 1080/^ retorted gold. Of this 58oz was from 27 loads quartz and 440z from 11 loads from the main reef at intermediate level and 6oz from 10 tons of tailings. Thames, Oct. 21. Lone Hand. — The crushing of 46 leads of quartz and lOlbs of picked stone has produced 108ozs lOdwts of retorted gold. Koyal Oak Mi>e (Coromandel). — Since date of last report there has been little or no change in the mine. The reef continues large, showing blotches of gold where the stone is solid, following up the junction of the cross-lead. The next stope has the appearance of turning out better, as the reef is making more solid, going up and showing coarse gold in the stone. There is nothing new to report from the tributer portion of the mine. Saxon. — Ihere is little change to report in the mine. In the drive at No. 5 level the reef has been broken down at intervals, 6or 8 feet at a time. Colours of gold have been seen at each breaking down, but no picked stone has been bagged. The amalgam from the berdans is 105ozs. The plate amalgam is not quite so good this week. New Moanataiari. — The stopes on the hangingwall bad, Nonpareil section No. 4 level, Darwin end, are now approaching the floor of No. 3 level. The quartz coming to hand from here has been shaping fairly well a f the battery during the week. Ten loads produced 34ozs of amalgam. The drive on the Golden Age reef, Point Russell level, has now been driven a total distance of 93ft. since starting, and is 13ft past the point where the rise must be commenced. The reef is a fine solid body of quartz from 4 to 5 feet thick, the whole of which looks very kindly, and is carrying some good bright mineral, bub no gold has been seen this week. The trial parcels oi 9 tons from here ; was finally crushed at the bactory on Saturday for the yield of 4dwts gold per ton. This week the rise is expected to be started. Last week nothing was done in extending the drive on the Reuben Parr reef, but a contract has been let for driving about 40ft to connect the two drives. New Princk Imperial. — The mine manager has ju&t started a leading stope in the drive. The lead in the eastern end is not looking so well as that in the western side of the break this week. The leader is looking very wweltl t and shows colours of gold. There are over live loads of quartz in the hoppers in readiness for crushing. Tribubers : Brown and Pearce got lOoz 14dwt melted gold from their crushing. BrownIce, Lough and party have crushed five loads of general dirt and 1001b stone for the good return of S3oz melted gold. Dunn and party have given up their holding at No. 2 level. They have been working since the first of the month and gob no quartz.
