The steamer Chingtu arrived ab Sydney last week. She brings files of Eastern papers to the 25th September, from which the following are extracted :—: — A fire broke out in the hold of the steamer Japan, which was lying in Hongkong Harbour, and caused damage to the amount of $2,000. During a theatrical performance at Foochow, the stage, which projected over the river, suddenly collapsed, precipitating over 100 persons into the water. One child was drowned. An exceptionally large number of fires occurred at Hongkong recently. A severe typhoon passed over a porb on of Japan a short time ago. Yokohama especially suffering. The destruction was confined chiefly to property on shore. Captain Crozzie, of the otter-hunting schooner Nemo has been committed for trial at Yokohama charged with causing the death of one of the crew by brutal treatment. One of two boilers of the steamer Yieya Maru exploded at Tokio. The engineer and a fireman were killed, and the vessel sank. A Canton telegram to the Hongkong *' Telegraph " states that 15 battalions of Thuman Braves have been ordered by the Viceroy to hold, themselves in readiness to proceed to Skekmun and other towns along the North-east and West rivers, as 60,000 junkmen have resolved not to sail their junks unless the Lekin Station at Shekmun be abolished. Trade is at a standstill in the whole of the towns affected, and shopkeepers have received orders from the leaders of ,the malcontents to put up their shutters on pain of being visited with dire vengeance. > The "Telegraph" considers the number on strike is probably exaggerated.

At Canton recently 30 robbers plundered several villages in the suburbs, and one of their number was shot by a night watch- . man, who was afterwards riddled with 16 balls. The villagers and other watchmen turned out and wounded and captured several robbers after a sharp conflict.
