ATHLETICS. (By Actæon in the " Auckland Star.")

Barlow Madigan is going down to the I Thames to work in the mines, I believe. He will join the Thames club if they hs*ve any more matches to play. Some of the Southern papers have been kind enough to put in circulation a charming little concoction to the effect that the Auckland Football Team carried with them on their Southern trip a professional trainer. Of course such a proceeding would make every member of the team a professional. However, it is well that it should be known that the 3tatement is absolutely without foundation, like a few other of the statements circulated about) the team. It is to be hoped that any of the papers which have 1 given currency to this false report will correct it if they happen to see this contradiction. Some surprise was expressed at the Rev. J. Hoatson not officiating as referee in the / Canterbury Otago match. Mr Hoatson, I understand, requested that another name \ should be submitted with his own, and Mr Cotterill was chosen. The following are the results of the football contests hitherto played between Canterbury and Otago :—: — 1378 : At Dunedin— Drawn, no score. 1879 : At Christchurch— Drawn, no score. 1880 : At Duneriiu— Drawn. 1 try each. 1881 : At Christchurch- Olago Avon by a goal and a try to nil. 1882 : At Dunedin-Otago won by 5 goals and 3 tries to nil. 1833 : At Christclrurch— Olago won by a goal an<l 3 trios to nil. 1884 : At Dunedin— Canterbury won by a goal to a t ry, 1885 : At Chi islchurch— Canterbury won by a gojil and 2 tries to ml. 1886 At Dunedin— Drawn, no score. 1837 • At Christchurch— Di awn, 1 goal each, 188S : At Dunedin— Otago won by a goal and 3 tries to ml. 1889 . At Christchurch— Otago won by 3 goals to a try.
