PURIFY NG THE ENGLISH TURF.

The disclosures in the late famous tur^ case, Chetwynd uerw, Durham, have led to numerous inqunies at the instigation of the Jockey Club. The withdrawal of Sherard's licence, and the warning oft of Wood and Macksey was followed by the stewards calling before them Mr John Hammond, of St. Gatien fame. This is the official account of the interview: — "The stewards of the Jockey Club held an inquiry during the July Meeting at Newmarket into the circumstances under which a large present was given by John Hammond to C. Wood in 1884, a few days after Florence, the property of the former, had won the Cambridgeshire, Wood having in the same race ridden Sandiuay, another leading favourite, and in a mannei contrary to orders. Mr Hammond stated that the present had been given to Wood for having ridden other winners for him dining the same week. The stewards, while not feeling called upon to take any further action in the matter, were unable to accept the explanation as .satisfactory."
