A GLANCE AT THE FUTURE.
The near approach of the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup Meetings is causing those who follow turf pursuits to endeavour to search out the probable winners of the Victorian Derby and "two Cups." Although qhe A.J.C. Meeting gave ua a line as to the likely Blue Riband winner being found in either Singapore or Dreadnought, only a gleam of light was thrown on the solution of the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup problems. Excepting the Hon. J. White's team, together with Manton and Melos, the horses that ran were a second-class lot, and if Cardigan and Keith are thrown in, we no doubt have the members that should run well in Victoria, where this year are located a strong contingent. The only New South Wales horse we did not see out who promises to have a Melbourne Cup chance is Antseus. He is receiving a special preparation, has been backed by his owner, and can -be counted on as a sure starter. It will be remembered that I selected Antteus among the likely ones out of four when the weights first appeared, and those who have backed him are promised a great run for their investment. Tradition and Singapore must both run well, and Silverton will be one of the shortesc-priced ones on the day, his connections having planked down the dollars on hid behalf in real earnest. It seems that Carbine will be another who is certain to be one of the best favouritea till the flag falls, but I decline to stand him to win unless the field dwindles down to a weak one, which I doubt. The Yeoman and Chicago arc horses which in all likelihood will be backed ere long, and probably also Sedition and Benzon. Next Saturday the Caulfield meeting opens, when the Guineas will be run. There are several reputed good three-year-olds in training in Melbourne, but it will take a clinker to put down White's best or Merriment, should he be a starter. For the Caulfield Cup, the Ballarat people have moved in favour of Oakleigh, which is sufficient to point that he will be dangerous, but there is no horse in the race I have such a liking: for as Benzon, the full brother to The Plunger trained on the Caultield course.
