MURDER OF A CHILD. AN INSANE MOTHER.
Wellington, October 8. A woman named Agnes Ann Corrado, wife of Pietro Corrado, an Italian, a clerk in the Colonial Insurance Office, was arrested tonight on a charge of murdering her infant girl, four months old. When Carrado went home this evening his little daughter of five told him her mother had put the baby into a bath in the morning, face downward, and kept it there all day. Running upstairs, he found the child dead on a bed, and sent for Dr. Fell, to whom, as well as to the police afterwards, Mrs Corrado confessed she had deliberately drowned it, adding that it was not hers, that the child had been changed, and that that was the best thing to do with it. She seemed perfectly rational while making- this strange statement, but some six years ago she was for a short time in a private asylum near Dunedin. Since then it is stated she has shown no signs of insanity. Mrs Corrado is an Englishwoman, about 35 years of age. Wellington, October 9. Mrs Corrado, arrested for alleged child murder, has been remanded for a week.
