RESIGNATION. (Written in St. Thomas' Hospital, London, October. 1877.)
I do not ask Thee, dearest Lord, To take away this pain : I only nsk Thee to accord Thy strength to bear the same. Why should I shrink to wear tho chains Of prerent grief and woo, When others round me writhe in pains That I may never know ? I wntoh the fno-is wan and pale Of thoso as dorr to Tboo As I, so tempted to bewail My parsing misery. Cold sweats s ifi'usc my fevered frame; But what is that to be Comparod to woes I cannot name In dark Gcthsemanc ? Great drops of blood, dear Lord, wero thine, In solitude to shed, So dread that angel hands divino Sustained Thy drooping head ! But. nh! my soul, a moment think Of the accursed tree; For love of such then do not shrink From human agony. The trial I am passing through Is only leading me Jfoaie- to Him I love, and sue For p irdon rich and free. Great God ! Thou canst not bo unkind, In spite of direst ill : I only ask to be resigned To Thy most holy will ! A. W. Hukuy. Newton, September, 1889.
