DRAUGHTS ITEMS.

Auckland CHAMrioNsnir.— ln order to test which is the best player efforts are being made to arrange a match between Messrs Wilson and Gunthorpe. Tho latter is willing to play 15 or 20 games " for love." The idea is to determine which of the two crack draughts players of Auckland can succeed best in attack and defence under the greatest number of published openings. In consequence of the many calls upon his time through holding a Government contract, Mr James Paterson has been reluctantly compelled to resign the honours of the Australasian championship into other hands. The contemplated match with Mr Gallacher, for which Mr ii J aterson had lodged i's a& earnest money, will not therefore take place. It has been decided to offer prizes of 100, 60, 40, 30, 25, 20, 15, and 10 dollars to be played for as draught prizes at Canada's forthcoming fair. On Saturday, the 7th of September, a meeting of the Committee of the Australasian and South Seas Championship Draughts Tournament was held in the Dunedin Draughts Club Room. Ib was stated that the Committee were meeting with good support in the shape of subscriptions. The following were elected members of the Commicteo : — Messrs Moir, Montgomery, and Davidson, of Sawyer's Bay, and Messrs Lawson, Risk, Brod'ie, Lowe, Peterson, Hutton, ELiwes and Cleary, of Dunedin.
