Deputation to the Warden.

Ow Monday evening at 8 o'clock the Town Board (represented by Messrs Gallagher (chairman), Lipsey, Ehevt, and Heathcote) ; and Messrs Robson, Dobson, and Harris, waited on Mr Warden Northcroft, with respect to the obtaining of "leases in perpetuity." ''{ Mr G. Wilson, Mining Inspector for the district, was also present). Mr* Gallagher shortly stated, the business/ After the matter had bien discussed Mr Lipsey said he thought it would be best to have the matter left entirely in the hands of the Warden. The subject then changed to the question oF rental. Mr Eberfc said : What the reidents wanted now was that (ill business allotments in the township except in Whitaker street be red viced from £o to £1 per annum. The Warden : IP the township grows that would not be fair ; the recent reductions made in the Mnr?*ntown part of the township are only Fnr so Ions: «s the allotments are not utilised for business purposes. * Mr Ebert : The residents would be quite willing to that pror's'on. Mr Dobson : It was understood when some of the townsfolk recently requested Mr lApaey to reduce the rental of back street allotments, that the rent was to be increased again in the event of any of the- ullotmrtJits boing used for business purposes. The Warden : I don't think the sec- j tions directly at the rear of Whi taker street should be reduced to so low a rental as from £5 to £1 j because they »re like the back entrance to a warphouse in a city, and enable the occupier to ute the whole of his front sections for business premises, bub I think the allotments in the other back streets should bereriucpd to £1. Yon have got to con--sMor what wonld be a fair thin? to do, a« between landlord or agent, and tenant.. .You- each look at it from your own point of viow. Mr Dobson : That is the difficulty, and the reason why it, would be best to leave the matter to yon. The Warden : This township was enfc up by Govnrnment nnd the Warden, with the consent of the Native owners, the rental being fired between the Native owners and the Warden at the time.- ' Mr Lipsoy : I think the granting f>f leases in perpetuity, would indrce people to build hotter houses and carry out more improvements. The Warden : Tl^re can be no doubt about that. As at present people really hold their business sites on a tenancy from year to year, « n d it is not likely they wilt put up such substantial buillings as they would do if they were in a position to transfer a good title in the event of wishing to sell. Mr Wilson at this stage suggested that it might materially assist matter* if himself (as he knew f^e various allotments very well), Mr Lipsey^ and one or two others went over the map of the township together, and marked off the sections to be reduced, and drafted some basis respecting the proposed alterations, to be discussed, «nd when finally decided on to be submitted to the Warden. It was decided to adopt Mr Wilson's suggestion, and this brought the meeting to a close.
