A Belgravian Romance.

Social gossip turns a good deal jusb now (writes the London correspondent of an Irish contemporary) on the romance of a gallant young constable and the admiral's daughter. The policeman had been almost permanently on a ' fixed point ' in the Belgravian district, Among the many ladies, young and old, whom it was his daily duty to escort over the crossings was a pretty and accomplished girl, whose father figures in the admirals' pension list. She was fascinated by the stalwurt boy in blue, it seems, and showed her sentiment in a manner which touched his heart with a returned passion. Half a year ago some friends surprised her in tender discourse with the • copper.' Their suspicions were roused by the familiarity ; they watched, and found that the girl not only haunted her lover when on duty, but that she met him when off duty, and spent hours in his company. They reasoned with her, and threatened to tell her father unless she promised to end the unequal acquaintance. She must have been an artful maiden, for i she gave the promise, and contrived to ' break it so skilfully that, though the romance ran its course as before, the friends were completely deceived into ohe belief that it was over. The truth was discovered very lately, when the lady disappeared from her home and the constable from his beut; and up to the present, it appears, nothing has been heard from the eloping pair.
