A Columbus Competition.
The 400 th anniversary of tho discovery of America by Columbus which, in the language ot the programme, culminates on the 12th of October, 1892, is to be celebrated by a prize of £1,200, and an ' accessit ' ot £600. which will be given under the auspices of the ' Royal Academy of History ' ot Madrid for the best original work on the wide subject of the discovery of the New World. The competition will be international, as the language used may be Spanish. Portuguese, English, German, French or Italian, the other conditions being explained in a prospectus lately issued by tho Duke de Veragua, vice-president of the Academy, and signed by two secietaries, of whom one, Senor Riano, is well known in literary London. It appears that Columbus landed on the 12th October, 1492, on some point of Tropical America, and if tho essayist can establish the exact spot ho will well deserve his premium for putting an end to what appears to be an* interminable discussion.
