MINING NEWS. Thames, September 17.
Saxon. — The usual fortnightly cleaning up and retorting for this Company will take place to-morrow, when a payable return may be anticipated. Trenton.— The deviation drive, from the crosscut from No. 4 level of the Cambria has been penetrating very hard country during the last few days, but it has now once more improved, being in the face a fair description of sandstone. This drive is now within 18 or 20 feet of the boundary, but the footwall of the Saxon reef has not yet been met with. In the drive from the bottom of the Company's shaft a further distance of 9 feet has been driven during the past week, the country here being also tight. Cambria. — Operations are proceeding much the same as usual, and quartz of payable grade is being broken out. A start is about to be made to open out an intermediate level on the eastern side of the rise on the main reef, at a point 40 feeb from No. 3 level. This will give about 50 feet of backs. Lone Hand. — Crushing will be commenced in a day or two at Bull's battery. In the General Chute drive at the low level the contractors are making about the same progress as last week, the country being somewhat tight butof a favourable character for gold-bearing leaders. The Moa reef 'has not yet been intersected, but should now be very close at hand. Caledonian. — The rise from No. 1 level on the No. 1 reef is now up 80 feet, with no | sign of old workings. Colours of gold are seen in the reef here, as also in the stope going off rise lower down, and the reef maintains its size and favourable appearance. The quartz broken from Brown's j leader, showing colours of gold, has not yet been crushed. We have commenced work on the hanging-wall of No. 2 level | with the intention of picking up No. 1 reef. Mr R. McDonald Scott was here on Saturday, and visited the various mines in which he is interested. New Prince Imperial. — The lead looks ! very well, and shows a few colours of gold. Brown and party, tributers, have crushed five loads of general dirt and three pounds picked stone for soz 17dwt melted gold. New Alburnia. — This reef shows about 6 inches of nice-looking mineral and indications are satisfactory. Saxon. — Nos. 1 and 2 reefs are both carrying good mineral. All the other workings are unchanged. The amalgam on hand from berdans for the four days' run is 7oz. New Moanataiari. — The lead in Non* pareil section of th 6 mine carries' some splendid mineral, and shows a little gold occasionally. In the Point Russell section the lode leading to the Golden Age reef is fully 2^in. thick. No gold has been seen in it yet, although the quartz looks very kindly. The total distance driven in theßeuben Parr reef is now 99 feet. The reef, which is of a very uniform size, from 18 inches to 2 feet, is still keeping a very straight course, and has two splendid walls standing almost upright. There is still a continuous flow of water from the face, which is evidently draining the suriounding j country.
