In Committee of Supply this morning the supplementary estimates and unauthorised expenditure were passed without any amendment, though there was opposition to a few items.

Sir Maurice O'Rorke deprecated fchis and specified the good work Mr Macandrew had done for the colony, such as fostering higher education and opening up steam communication with the colonies. Several others spoke. Another division was called for, and against it there voted Messrs Goldie, Monk, Thompson (2), Lawry, Harkness, and Izard, the ayes being 29 and the noes 7. Mr Monk raised a question about the vote for school buildings being placed among the Defence Department estimates, wishing it transferred back to the Education Department. The Minister assured him that the vote would be allocated as> in the past to the various Education Boards, but there were a few places where schools were required, and designs for these could be supplied cheaper by the Defence Department. |
