FOOTBALL.
Over 25,000 spectators were presenb to watch the football oontest on August 24th between Essendon and Carlton (Victorian Rules). The match was played on the East Melbourne Cricket Ground, Carlton winning by 5 goals to 3. The gate represented t531 ! Septembor 10th. was the fifth time tb»*3 Auckland and Otago have met in the Rugby field, with the following results :—: — 1875.— At Dunedin. Otago won by 9J points to } point. 1877.— At Auckland. Drawn, no score. 1883.— At J)unedin. Drawn, no score. J BB7.— At Auckland. Auckland won by 5 points to nil. 1889.— At Olajio. Drawn, 3 points each. So it will be seen from the foregoing that Auckland and Otago have met five times, each have scored a win, while three of the games have resulted in draws.
