Score.— Reed, 9; Barker, 7; drawn, 34: Total, 50 games, It will be seen that on the 12bh ult. \the ninth day of the match) six games were played, of which Barker won thiee, Reed one, and two wore drawn. The " American Checker Review " explains Reed's break -down on that day—" To relievo a throat irritation, Reed procured some cough drops, and, entirely ignorant that their curative ingredient was morphine, he consumed one package on Monday, two on Tuesday, and three on Wednesday, and was so completely under the effect of the drug that it is surprising he did not lose more than three games that day. Tho game he scored was owing to a &illy move of Barker's when all hope for a win had vanished. Everybody thought Reed had broken down under a severe strain, bub Mr Hefter fortunatelydiscovered the true cause of the trouble, and overy possible means were taken to throw off the drowsy, dull feeling. This was accomplished in about two days, and when Barker again tried the ' Wisp,' on which he had previously scored a win, he found Reed fully prepared to return the compliment."
