EUGENICS COOINESS. How The French Empress Prevented a Panic.
Tub first occasion on which Mme. Caretfco saw tKe Empress was at a ball given bo the imperial couple in the Tow n Hall at Fonta'inebleau in August, 1858 — a fete which' very nearly ended, tragically, Tho ballroom had been installed on the upppr storey of tho buildings the guests had assembled, and the Emperor,, and Empress hftd taken their places, when it was suddenly discovered that the ceiling of the •room was in a dilapidated condition, and the: motion of the dancers had so shaken the rickety old building that . the chandeliers ' over the throne were oscillating in the most alarming manner. The Empress had a happy inspiration. , She quietly rose, and. taking the Emperor's arm, proceeded at a slaw pace to the Bupper - room, .followed by the g'ceqfcer part ,of the guests. It was then possible to warn the comparative few that remained of the dancers and request them to leave. Thus the/ risk of a. 'panic * was 'averted, and, although tho ball came Lo an abrupt termination, there was no accident" to lite or limb. — ,' London Times.' ' I
