FEARFUL EXPLOSION. London, Sept. 6.
A cartridge factory at Antwerp exploded to day. Two hundred workmen were killed, and 100 wounded. Sevei-al petroleum factories adjoining caught fire, and 100,000 barrels of petroleum burst. It was the Corvilanis Cartridge Factory which exploded. The shock much resembled that of an earthquake. Its effect was even more disastrous than at first reported. It is now estimated that fully three hundred persona were killed, and a thous,and wounded. The river Scheldt was covered with burning petroleum, but tortunately the wind was blowing in a direction that left the shipping untouched. Two hundred factory . girls are either killed or seriously injured. The geneial damage to the port at Antwerp, including the Bourse, is most extensive. It is fearedf that the steeple of the Cathedral is injured. Every window in Antwerp was broken. All the crane machinery in connection with the port lies in ruins. ' . A block of buildings covering a space of two acres was destroyed by a fire which occurred after the petroleum explosion.
