MINING NEWS. Thames, September 3.
May Qceex. — The con h actors are still making excellent progress with the cleaning out and repairing of the shaft. The winding engine works very smoothly. Saxon. — In the drive at No. 5 level going hilhvard of No. 2 break the reef is still showing a little gold, and a few pounds of picked stone are being saved. The amalgara on hand from berdans is 670z. New Prince Imperial. — The country in the winze is keeping very good for gold, although not so much has been seen this week as the previous week. Dunn and party have crushed one load of general dirt and 201b picked stone for the good return of 17oz. lOdwts. melted gold. Alburma. — Irwin and party have crushed four loads of quartz for 17oz of Kold. Lose Hand. — The prospects of this Company continue excellent, and considerable inteiestis being evinced in the pi'Ofjress of the General Chute drive at the low le\el, as from the prospects met with in the level above nnd the indications lett in the floor — gold being visible in several places, it is confidently expected that good gold will be unearthed when the Adelaide reef is intersected. This diivo is now penetrating a much-impioved channel of sandstone, which is all that could be desired for gold, and the Moareef shou d be cut in two or throe weeks, after which it will be driven upon through the Adelaide claim until the boundary of the Lone Hand Co. 's mine Manchester section, is reached Dabs and colours of gold are seen distributed through the quartz in the several stopes, and the quartz is of excellent grade. New Moanataiari. — The hangingwall lead in the stopes above No. 4 level, Cambria shaft, Nonpareil section of the mine, continues to improve, theie being now a fine band of mineralised quartz fully three inches thick running through the lead for the whole length of the stope. Only a few colours of gold hive as yet been seen, but the quartz is shaping much better at the battery, seventeen loads reduced during the week, and yielding 40oz amalgam. In the main crosscut, Cambria end, the small white vein on the back of the formation continues to show gold almost every breaking down. From a ioofc to IS inches crushing dirt is being saved for treatment. The best of the quartz got in the drive, Point Russell section, is being selected for a trial crushing. Loni: Hand. — The contractors for the low level completed their allotted distance to-day, but arrangements have been made for them to continue driving until the reef is cut, which should be about the end of this week, and not fortnight, as previously stated. Trenton. —There is no apparent change in the nature of the country being penetrated in the drive at the bottom level. In the crosscut from the Cambria No. 4 level, the footwall of the Saxon reef should be to hand in a few days. Calkdoman. — The mine manager reports : in confirmation of my wire of this day'a date I beg to acquaint you as follows tor the information of the directors :— The old timber of which I informed you on the 29th as having been met with in the rise on No. 1 reef proves to be an old drive, but the reef is intact above it, and in breaking a portion of it to-day some good colours of gold wore seen. The opening up of this block is being pushed on as speedily as possible. Colours of gold have also been seen in Brown's leader, and the other works are progressing. All the battery is at work on quartz from the mine.
Sometimes we wonder what Solomon w ould have thought if he had seen a woman careering along on a bicycle. Would he thereafter have declared that " there is nothing new under the sun ?" " My friends," said a politician the other day, with a burst of ingenuous eloquence, "I will be honest—" The terrific outburst of applause which followed this remark entirely upset the point which the orator was about to make.
