Shipping Catastrophe. COLLISION AT SYDNEY. THE CENTENNIAL SUNK All Hands Saved. Sydney, August 24.
Great excitement was causod here this morning b}' the news of a steamboat catastrophe which happened in Sydney harbour during the night, and by which the steamer Centennial, of the Ellis line, has been lost The steamer was bound for Wellington, and left Circular Quay last evening, taking a number of passengers in addition to a consideiable cargo. The Union Company s s.s. Ringarooma took her departure for Wellington about the same time, also conveying passengers and carg^o. It now transpires thab on her way out of the harbour the Centennial camo into collision with another vessel, the name of which has not yet been ascertained, and that sha was very badly damaged. Immediate steps were taken to secure the safety of the passengers and crew, and it is stated than all hands have been saved. The Centennial sank in tho harbour very soon after the accident. No further details aie yet to hand, but they will be cabled as soon as received.
