Tree Planting in South Australia.
We congratulate the Government of South Australia on the wisdom which is prompt" ing them to carry on tree planting on a very large scale. In such an arid climate tho planting of extensive areas with trees cannot lail to be an immense public bonetit Ib is satisfactory to note that the people seem fully alive to tho importance of this \vx>rk.. A deputation recently interviewed the Minister of Education to ascertain whether the Government would favourably consider the idea of setting apart a day to be called Arbour Day. The Minister said he strongly favoured the planting of trees, with the view of increasing the lainfall. He asked the Agricultural Bureau to formulate a scheme and lay it before him, when he would consider the subject. It is stated that owing to the exceptionally good season the Woods and Forests Department intend to plant at least 1,000,000 trees during June, July and August, in addition to over 700,000 young trees, all available for free distribution to farmers and others. The number of young trees raised by the Forest Conservation Department for the season 1889-90 was 7Q9,900. It is computed that there are now some million tree? above those given giatis to fanners and otheis during the last fixe years. ♦■
