Tho friondly match at draughts between Mr Wm. Roid, the celebrated Ayrshire draught player, and Mr TUcCulloch, the well-known author and publisher at " Andersons 3rd" Edition " and " MeCullouh'a (-lufdb, 1 * took place in the Temperance Hall, KiJrnarnock, on June Bth. The proceedings were opened by Mr Reid playing all-comers for* two hours, dunng which time he contested and won 14 panics in . Mr McCulloch then took matters in hand, and for ,t\vo hours kept all-comers busy, playing 11 games, of which he won 10 and 1 was drawn. In the evening the (avo champions played 5 game*, the result being— " Reid, 1 ; McCulloch, 0 ; drawn, 4. The friendly match between George Wilson, of Avondale, and C. Gunthorp, ,ot Newton, resulted in a victory for the former. His youthful opponent played well, but tho older man manifested greater experience, and ultimately won. As Mr Wilson ceded tho championship of Auckland to Mr Gunthorp rather than play a public match , for a sum ot - money, it is to be hoped 1 hat some definite understanding wiH bo t arrived ab to show which is really the champion. Although the- exchampion proved victorious ,on this occasion, Mr Gun thorp's friends are still willing to back him to be successful in a I .series of 15 game's. It remains to be seen whether Mr Wilson's, recent victory will encourage him to make a public efcrugglo to regain tho championship of Auckland.
