Consumers are anxious to know how long present high prices of sujrar are to last, or whether we have gob to the top yet. Of course, no satisfactory answer can be returned. Wo are right in the midstof the moj-t active reason of the year, tn this part ot the country the consumptipn for 1889 has about reached its maximum. Tne canners will not take as much as was afc one time expected. In the Atlantic States the heaviest consumption of sugar usually comes in July and August, or about a month later than in California. Lt is thought a tailing off in consumption, which is bound to occur'soon, will hai'c its effect on prices. Another elemont will be in operation of the new refinery of Glaus Spreckels in Philadelphia, which will soon start up. This refinery can give the public s,ooo"bbls per day or 200,000bbls per annum. Such an addition to the supply of the outside of the Sugar ( Trust will make itself felt. It is likely that the independent refineries will work in har- v mony, and when the new one at Philadel-' phia begins to turn out its s,ooobbls daily, consumers may reasonably expect to be protected from any Undue exactions of the i Sugar Trust. At ,presonfc every pound of sugar costs consumers here 2£c. per lb more ] than a' year ago. This makes a big difference with large consumers. — 'Ban Francieco Bulletin.'
