SPORTING NEWS. TURF LAWSUIT AT CHRISTCHURCH.

Cukistchurch, July 30. JVIr H. Pii'EK, late trainer of the racehor&e Sultan, sued Mr Williams, the owner of tho horse, in the Uesidenl Magifti-ate's Court, to-day, for an amount of commission alleged to be due over the Dunedin Cup. After heaving the evidence, the plaintiff's counsel elected to take a non - suit. During his cross-examination, PipeV said Cutts, the owner and trainer ot Dudu, had made a proposal to him, two days before the Wellington meeting, to ask Mr Williams to scratch Sultan for the Wellington Cup, and take half the stake won by Dudu, and give Cutts half the stakes if Sultan might win at Dunedin. Piper wrote a letter objecting to the proposal to Mr Williams, but after consulting with W. White, the jockey, who opposed the idea, he saw Cutts again and destroyed the letter. Piper, however, affirms the horses subsequently ran on their merits. The steeplechaser Orangeman was sold to-day to settle a partnership account, and fetched 80 guineas, J. Rae being the purchaser.
