MR JUSTICE GILLIES. FUNERAL AT EPSOM.

Auckland, July 30. The obsequies of the late Mr Justice T. B. Gillies took place yebteiday afternoon at St. Andrew's Cemetery, Epsom. Although the weather was mo^t unpleasant and the scene of interment a considerable distance out of town, the \ciy laige and lepresentati\e attendance ot mourners and friends of the late Judge testified veiy strongly to the hijrh position of respect and esteem in the minds of his acquaintances and townsmen which he had attained. Prior to the funeral corht/e leaving the late la^idencc of the deceased at Kocklandf-, Epsom, the Rev. D. Biuce held a brief l'resbyteiian service, and at 3 p.m. the piocession started for the Epsom cemetoiy, being neatly a milo in length. In the order oi proce~?ion the fii&t thtee carriages were occupied by the chief mourners : — Mr and Mrs Farquhar Macrae, their two sons, Miss M. Bruce, Mr George Gillies, Rev. D. Bruce, Messrs A. .Sinclair, G. Sinclair, \V. Ait ken, \V. Bruce, Dr. Honey man, Messis H. G. Barstow, G. B. Owen, and Shirley. A cariiage representing the Government followed, occupied by Dr. (tile?, R.M. Colonel C. F. Ilaultain was to have accompanied Dr. Giles as Government representative, but was absent in Waikato. in the fifth carnage were the officers of the Supreme Court, Major Gascoyne(Sheiiti), H. G. Brewer (Registrar), G. W. Barley (Deputy-Registiar), J. C. Bas.sett (Librarian). The next carriage contained Mr McLean (Assi.'-canb-librarian), and other officers ; Messrs Theo. Killing (Registrar of Deed-), Mr Hall (Examiner of Titles), J. Lawson (Official Assignee), G. S. Reston (Gaoler). In carnages following came a number of rnembeis of the local legal piofes«ion : — Messrs A. E. Devorc (Mayor), F. \V. E. Brookfield (ex-Judge Native Lands Court), Mr Hudson Williamson (Crown Prosecutor), E. Hesketh, E. A. Mackechnie, Theo. Cooper, P. Dignan, W. H. Armstiong, E. Mahony, J. B. Russell, Hugh Campbell, \V. J. Hill, 0. S. George, T. Buddie, C. Buddie, W. J. Napier, J. O'Meaghcr, C E. Button, 1\ Oliphant, Johnston, Gribbin, W. Coleman, S. Jackson, E. T. Dufaur, S. I le&kefch, Jb\ E. Baume. J. M. Thorne, Inspector Brohatn, A.C. Next came Professors Aldis, Thomas and Brown (Auckland University College), Mr C. A. Bourne (Headmaster Auckland College and Grammar School ), Dr. Kidd (Registrar Auckland University). The Board of Education were represented by Messrs J. H. Upton (Chairman), Y. E. Rice (Secretary), Allright (architect), and S. Luke, member of the Board. Mr C. Atkin. Chairman, represented the Charitable Aid Board. The foreign Consuls presentwere Messrs D.B.Cruickshank (French), Herman Brown (German), J. M. Shera (Italian), and Arthur Masy (Belgian.) The clergymen present were : Bishop W. G. Cowie, Archdeacon Dudley (Anglican), Monsignor McDonald (Roman Catholic), Revs. G. B. Monro, R, Scott West (Presbyterian), A. Reid, E. Best, J. H. Simmonds ( Wesleyan), Hon. Rev. W. Shirley Baker (Premier of Tonga), T. Spurgeon (Baptists Drs. Philson, Mackollar, and J. Logan Campbell, attended. Amongst the occupants of the following carriages were — Captains H. F. Anderson, Olive, Marandrew, Colbeck (Chairman of Chamber of Commerce), P. Dignan and J. Andrews (Bank of New Zealand), J. Coates (National Bank), W. S. Wilson and A.' G. When St. Andrew'b Church was reached, tho incumbent, Rev. Mr Marshall, held a brief mortuary servico in tho Church after the Church of England ritual, and afterwards read the remainder of the service at the grave. The whole service was performed most impressively. The coffin was covoied with Iloial oflerings, wieaths, crosses, etc., j^laced tlieio by friends and mourneis of the late Judgo, and the remains interred close by tho of his deceased wife. Tho funeral ananjroincnt3 for the occasion were conducted by Mr Jonathan Winks, of Messrs Winks and Hall, undertakers.
