BOOM AT REEFTON. Reefton, August 21.

Another mining boom is on here to-day. The "Nil Desperanduin " is the favoured stock. Shares have risen from 2s 9d yesterday, to 7s 3d to-day, in consequence of the reported striking of a rich block of stone in the mine.

. William Beach, ex-champion oarsman of the world, had a very narrow escape from drowning at Wollongong on July 30. He Was rowing' on the lake with his son, aged 14, when a squall upget him, and he had to swim for the shore and carry the boy with him. He was pretty well exhausted when he reached land.
