Mfl Justjpe Qillies died suddenly of apoplexy to-day. Yesterdny forenoon lie sat as President in the Court of Compensation, vrith Messrs Parstow and Carr as assessors, and jn the afternoon he paid a visit to the property in question, situated at Orakei, J3e was unwell yesterday, and when he retired to rest last night he told his housekeeper to call him about 8 o'clock this morning, When she called hjmshe received no reply, and upon opening the door af tho bedroom Judge Gillies was discovered lying upon the bed in an insensible condition, with blood about his mouth, Pr Honeyinan was scut for, and a.i rived about nino o'clock. He immediately recognised the serious nature of the seizure, and on his suggestion Drs Mackellar ami Bond were summoned by telephone, both of whom were promptly in attendance. From the first but little hopes weie entertained of his recovery ; still all that skill pould do was tped by the three medical gentleman in attendance, but was of no avajl, and Mr Gjjjies passed away about 11.30 a,.m,. When the n«ws became known in the city all the legal offices were closed, and the flag op the municipal buildings was hoisted half rqast high.
MR J. C. FIRTH A BANKRUPT. Joseph Clifton Firth, miller, filed a petition to be adjudged a bankrupt this afternoon.
THE REPRESENTATION BILL. TOWN VERSUS COUNTRY. Acquisition, influentially signed, was presented to the Mayor to-day, asking him to convene a public meeting for jto-niouow night, to support the nvmbors or the House of Representatives in the city and suburban districts of Auckland, iv maintaining tho rights of cities under the Reprasentation Bill. TYPHOID FEVER AT WELLINGTON. Mr Fulton, son of the member for Tnieri, and Engineer of tlio WellingtonManawatu Railway Co., has died from typhoid lover. This disease seems prevalenthere at present. Captain Saville, the Governor's Aido-de-Camp, is also down, besides a number of private persone.
LADY ONSLOW GOES TO KELSON. Lady Onslow, Lord Cranley, and tutor left for Nelson yesterday, to remain there until the first week in August, On dit, that fear of the typhoid scourge had something to do with their departure.
