ATHLETICS.

By Action in the " Auckland Star."

The Ten Miles Amateur Championship of England was run on May 6fch at the London Athletic Club's ground, and resulted in a win for Sid Thomas in the splendid time of Slmin. 3]^sec. , J. Kibble white being second in 51min. 40? sec. Last yeai's champion, E. W. Parry, was absent. Thomas is a member of the Rarelaigh Harriers. His time is only llfsec. behind the best on record, made by W. G. George. The Ten Miles Championship of Scotland was won by A. Hannah in 58min. 30£ sec. Sheirill, the American sprinter, has run 125 yards in 12|sec. He starts on "all fours," a la T. L. Nicholas, of Monmouth, a method of starting which has been declared to be illegal by the Amateur Athletic Association. There seems a strong disposition in England to put down road-racing on bicycles. The police have taken the rnattor up, and several convictions against riders who baA r e taken part in such races have been secured. Monnock, the old Auckland runner, won the Grenfell Handicap near Sydney, with 15yds last week, but was immediately disqualified for life, not having sent his record in. It is unlikely, however, that the disqualification will be sustained. Skitch, another New Zealander, ran third in the 250 yds Botany Handicap.
