IN-AND -OUT RUNNING.

In Australia, in-and-out running is now so notorious at every race-meeting that the authorities are being compelled to take steps to bring about an alteration in this deplorable state of aflairs. On the occasion of the recent A.J.C. Winter Meeting at Randwick, the stewards took notice of the vastly different running of the hurdleracer Friction on two successive Saturdays. On the first occasion the gelding was made favourite for the Stewards' Mile— owner " forestalled, '' of course — and played a most ignominous part in the race ; while he won the Hurdle Race at Randwick easily. The result of the inquiry is that Mr Tom Brown and Friction have each been disqualified for an indefinite period, while Lee, the jockey, goes into rotirement for the space of a year. It may be added that the disqualification of the owner of Friction extends to all horses owned or trained by him. Amongst them are Centaur, winner of the last Sydney Turt Club Birthday Cup, who is entered for the Metropolitan Stakes and Hawkesbury Handicap, also the Melbourne Cup. In the latter case the "V.R.C. Committee will be asked to endorse the disqualifiation, which they will no doubt accede to.
