(Via Brindisi) ANGLO-COLONIAL NOTES. (FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. )
London, May 24. The past week has been one of the dullest I ever remember in Anglo-Colonial circles. The season is approaching its apex, and, taking advantage of the glorious summer ' weather, everyone seems pleasure-seeking. To - morrow (Saturday) evening Lord Knufc&ford will entertain the AgentsGeneral for the Australian colonies, the High Commissioners of Canada and most of the ex -Viceroys, etc., in town, at> the usual Queen's Birthday dinner. v - Sir Henry and Lady Loch are the guests of the English Ambassador and Lady ' Lyttpa in Paris. - They have visited the. Exhibition several times, and expressed such satisfaction with tbe Australian ccc-, tions,. as ,they conscientiously could. Fortunately, th,e gold arch at the entrance to j tho Victorian Courtis sfcitl incomplete, so[ that !Sir Henry vyas able to say that no > doubt the general effect would be greatly enhanced presently. He confided^ however, to Mr De Castolla (I believe it was) his regret that the colonies generally should have neglected such a valuable opportunity of displaying their resources to Europe. This seems, indeed, to be the opinion of evory Anglo-Colonist after visiting Paris. The truth is, of course, that the AgentsGeneral (with the exception of Sir Francis Bell) wholly underrated, till too -late, -the importance of tho Exhibition, fancying, it would be a mere " Colindies " or " Heallheries," whereas it could conveniently swallow four or five such shows. By-the-way, Mr De Castella was inclined to seriously imperil the success of the Australian Wine Bar in the Trocadero grounds by charging a franc (tenpence) per glass tor all vintages vended. His co-Commissioners, however, overruled him, and half a franc is the yyrixjixe,.
