Everything then went well till 5 p.m., when with the baiometcr at 29dog. 64min. the wind suddenly fell calm, leaving the vessel tumbling about in a high aea. une huge wavo found its way on board, Hooding the decks fore and aft, and threatening to sweep evoiy thing betore ib. Taking advantago of &bo calm, steam was got up and the course resumed, and by midnight a light -north-west breeyo had sot in and promised to help the vessel. As- it happened/- nowevci, the north-wester did not last long, for there was a shift to the westward and the .ship had to thump against it with the risk ot having her decks flooded. There was also a heavy .swell with the wind.
