MINING NEWS. THE THAMES DEEP LEVELS. PUMPING TO BE CARRIED ON FROM 500 FT. LEVEL.

As briefly mentioned in our lasb issue, the matter of carrying on pumping operations from the _ 500 ft level of iho Big Pump was considered at the meeting ot the Drainago Bjard held at the Thames yesterday. The object wes introduced by the Chairman (Mr Lennox), who explained that at a meeting of the Auckland members of the Board hold recently re pumping from -tho 500 ft level so as to allow the Saxon (Jo. to w ork at a lower level, it was agreed that such should be done, provided the Saxon Company paid one half tho co&tot reducing the water, and one-half the increased cost of pumping afterwards. The Saxon Company, however, did not seem inclined to tako advantago of this proposal, and this morning Mr Dunlop had expressed an opinion that the Board should reduco tho water at its own cost. The action of tho Board had hitherto been in the direction of encouraging deep level prospecting as far as possible, and he thought the application should receive overy consideration. — Tho consent of mombors having beeu obtained, Mr Punlop. munagor of the Saxon Company's mine, addressed the Poard. The Chairman asked whether tho Saxon Compnny would givo a guarantco that a certain amount would bo oxpended in the event of the Board agreeing to pump fiom a low level. — Air Dun lop replied that they would expend £6,000 or £7,000, and do 800 or 900fb of diiving, in addition bo crosscutting, while a rock borer had been ordoied. The Board should pump tho water down to the 500 ft level at its own cost, as it was not fair to ask the Saxon Co. to pub the machinery in order that such could bo done. After somo conversation, the Chairman moved, " That tho Boaid take steps to pump from the 500 ft. level without delay, and that the Saxon Company aflerwauls pay ono-half of the increased cost ol pumping from this level.'' — Carried. — "Auckland Star," July 10.
