MINING NEWS.

Thames, J uly 5. Nkw Manukau. —Manager to-day banked 40oz of gold. Cambria. — This morning the mine manager wired :— "Crushed 28 loads quarbz for 45^oz retorted gold." Lone Hand. — Gleaning-up and letorting toek place yesterdaj' for the return ot ISax from 45 loads quartz and 201b picked stone. Saxon. — A few days ago the managor started a work which it was thuught might eventually prove of somo importance, but unfortunately it lias resulted disappointingly. This was the drivo at No. 4 lovel on a body of quartz about 2ft in thicknoss, running in the hanging-w all of the main reef near the No. 2 winzo. As this drive has been oxtended upon the course of the reef, it has been found that the lode iorms a kind ol curvo, and has again veered round and come into tho main body ol stone. With this exception thero is no change to report in this mine. Cumbria. — Operations in this Company's mine are progressing much the same as usual. A leading stope has been started Avestward ot the winze, on No. 7 leader, and colours ot gold aro been in tho quartz, which I it of a very kindly description. In the drive westward ot tho winze at the intormediato level colouis ot gold are freely .seen in the leader, winch is iour or fivo inches in width. The rihO on the main reof over No. 3 level is being continued and is up sixteen or seventeen feet, the quart/, being all that could be desired lor gold. There is no change to report in the appearance ot the hangingwall leader in the stones. LoNK Hand. — As the result oi the survey mado a day or two ago, tho manager has decided not to crosscut, but to pick up the reel at the low level — at any rate for tho piese^t— and to push ahead the drivo with all possible expedition. There is a considerable distance to drive to reach the point where tho Adelaide leet will be in levsect-ed. but once this low level is in the required distance and the roei is to hand, it is expected that handsome leturns will bo obtained. Sloping operations are proceeding much the same as when last lepoited, colouis of gold being frequently seen in the quartz broken out. TitiiNTON. — It was currently reported on 'Change yesterday that white tand&tone had been met within the dmoftom the Company's own shaft. In caee news to this effect should reach Auckland and cause some misappieheiifeion, I may stale that tho statement is inconect. The countiy in the face of this diive i.s still hard rock, such as formerly existed. In the crosscut fiom the Cambria No. 4 level, the country lias not improved much in colour, and is of a daik nature, though somewhat better headway is now being made, as it id softer than hitherto. Br; Pump. —Pumping operations will cease on Sunday morning, in order to enable preparations to bo made fo>- the annual boiler inspection. Mr W. H. Phillips, manager ot the Pump, has received an intimation from j\lr Jobson that he will be at the Thames on Friday, the 12th inst., so that it is probable pumping will be subpended for six or seven days', whilo it will take about a similar period to reduce the water that will accumulate dining the stoppage. Koval Oak (Coromandel).— For the past week there has been no change to X'eport fiom tho mine. TJioro is a good-looking reef in hand, which was again broken down, showing no gold, although there aie good indications showing on both walls. During the week the tiibuters have been getting some picked stone, making in all on hand about 501 band 1A tons ot general stuff, which will be treated at the batteiy tomorrow, expected to realise 20oz. Thames, June 8. Lone Hand.— The manager has decided to push ahead the extension of the low lovel tunnel to intellect the Adelaide reef, with all possible expedition, and tenders are now invited foi driving 100 feet. Colours of gold aro frequently seen distributed through the quartz coming to hand from the stopes. b-vxoN. — As mentioned in a telegram on Satin any, opeiations in this Company's mine and also at the battery have been suspended for at Iviaso a week. This has been lendered necessary owing to the Big Pump boiler inspection, and some repairs and alteiations being lequired to the battery and winding engine. Tukntox.— The western drive has been driven a distance of 24 feet during the we.ek, and during the last day or two the country gieatly improved. The conbrac-toi-D have d liven tho bottom level a distance of 8 feet during the week. There is no change in the country here as yet.
