Domain Board.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Te Aroha Hot Springs Domain Board was held on Saturday evening last. Present : Messrs Gavin (Chairman), Wilson, and A bier. The minutes of the previous monthly meeting were road and confirmed. Correspondence: From Mr C Gould, Palmerston North, stating the Board had an electric battery belonging to him, and asking them to kindly return same, and lie (Mr Gould) would pay cost of carriage. The Chairman said he had authorised the Clerk to return the batteiy to Mr Gould, with the thanks of the Board, and to pay cost of carriage. The Clerk stated he had forwardedthe battery to Mr Gonld, and had received a letter in reply, stating the battery had been received, but was without handles,

and requesting thtt they ba forwarded per parcel post. He (the Clerk) had looked for the handles but could riot find them. The Chairman said he thought that Mr J. P, Vause had got the handles, as he had been trying to put the battery in working order. The Clerk was instructed to Write to Mr Vanso, and ask him if he knew anything of the handles ;* also to acknowledge Mr Goulds letter, ,' ". Lawn Extension : With reference to sowing the grass seed, the Chairman said he thought it would bo better to wait until the spring of the year before doing so, and then sow it down ; as if sown now there wa9 a probability of its not coming to anything as the ground was too cold. The Chairman stated it had been necessary to pnt on an extra man to assist in carrying out the work on the lawn extension, and he had therefore engaged Bennett for the work. Domain Fence : With reference to raising the frontage fence along Whitaker Street, the Chairman said he found on examining it that it would be necessary to make • culvert, and oltaining some pipes from the Town Board he had had the, work carried out. The other portion of the fence he thought it would not do to interfere with as the shrubs were coming oh well, and to disturb them would mean spoiling the hedge. Improving No. 6 Bath : [At the previous monthly meeting it was resolved to leave the carrying out of the improvement to No. 6 bath (by having a reservoir made at a spring a short distance higher up in the Domain ; and connecting with No. 6 bath by means of n pipe), in the- hands of the Chairman.] Respecting this work the Chairman reported that so far the work done had been a complete failure, as the contractor had no idea whatever of the work he had undertaken. Instead of carrying out I the work as he should have done he had I cut a largo chamber, and through not using timber the whole thing had collapsed, and he thought it a mercy the man had not been buried alive. He then I set to work r.o cut another chamber, and he was warned that this would give way , in the same way as the first had dono if he did not timber it. He (the contractor) went and secured the services of a man, who cut two sets of timber, but those i not being put in, and rain coming on, this also had fallen in, and he (the Chairman) did not think the Board could now get the work carried out for less than about £20. McDevitt (the contractor) had written a letter to the Board, stating the position he was in, and tried to throw the blamo on to the Board, and saying that he was willing to come to some arrangement. The members present were of opinion an action for damages should be taken against McDevitt, but after some discussion it was left in the hands of the Chairman to see McDevitt and get an explanation of what he meant by saying " he was willing to como to some settlement."
